UNIFORMS AND MEMORABILIA

UNIFORMS

Uniforms were first used in the 1850's to identify one team from another.  The main identifier of these uniforms would be the belt, which was worn backwards with the team name located on the belt.    In later years, team names or initials were sewn onto the jersey's to identify each club.  Jersey styles changed frequently over the years and included the bib front or shield style, lace-up style, pull-over high collar style, and the button-up style.  They were made of several materials which included wool, flannel and cotton.  The first pants were straight leg trousers and then changed in the 1860's the Cincinnati Red Stockings began wearing a knciker style.  Caps started as a pill box style with some having stripes around them.  In the 1880's a more round style hat with a small bill became popular. The shoes started as a canvas high top with small metal cleats on the bottom and in 1890's a low cut shoe with sharp metal cleats would become the shoe of choice.
